After nearly 30 years of service to the State of South Carolina, Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall announced her retirement this week, effective March 31, 2024. Hall has served as Secretary of Transportation for approximately ten years since she was appointed by Governor Nikki Haley.
Secretary Hall rose through the ranks at SCDOT and has just about done it all – from design to construction, to maintenance, to serving in several different leadership positions on the Finance and Engineering sides of the agency.
Her leadership and expertise have been instrumental in rebuilding South Carolina’s infrastructure and trust in arguably one of the state’s most complex and publicly visible agencies.
SCFOR congratulates Secretary Hall on her well-deserved (impending) retirement. March 31 will officially mark the end of an era and it is one we are glad we got to be a part of.
SCDOT Commissioners have appointed SCDOT Chief Operating Officer Justin Powell to serve as the next Secretary of Transportation upon the retirement of Secretary Hall. Powell’s appointment must be submitted to the South Carolina Senate for confirmation.
In Powell’s remarks to the SCDOT Commission on January 18, he touted his pride and appreciation for being a part of the SCDOT team. Also, he included a testament to the responsibility they have as an agency and the importance of maintaining momentum moving forward.
In a press release, Powell said, “I am honored and humbled to be appointed to serve as the next Secretary of Transportation. I want to thank the Commissioners for their trust and confidence in me to lead this department. Our most important asset at SCDOT is our people, and I am committed to supporting our employees as they continue to diligently serve our great state. To me, there is no higher calling to serve the people of South Carolina, and I look forward to the bright future ahead.”
SCFOR congratulates Powell on his appointment, and we look forward to continuing to work with him.
