The SCFOR Annual Meeting took place on Thursday, November 13, bringing a sold-out crowd to the Hall at Senate’s End. SCFOR Chairman Paul Edwards opened the event by underscoring the vital role transportation infrastructure plays in South Carolina’s economic competitiveness. He emphasized the ongoing need to educate both the public and policymakers about sustainable, long-term transportation solutions.
The program began with remarks from SCDOT Commissioner Curtis Spencer, followed by a presentation from Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell. Secretary Powell offered a timely agency update, highlighting efforts to maintain momentum in project delivery while navigating the demands of a fast-growing population and an evolving economy.
Representatives Roger Kirby (D-Florence), Robby Robbins (R-Dorchester), and David Vaughan (R-Greenville) shared insights into the SCDOT Modernization Ad Hoc Committee’s work. The 24-member group recently wrapped up a statewide listening tour designed to gather feedback from communities across South Carolina. With public input in hand, the committee will now focus on developing policies to improve efficiency, streamline project delivery, and evaluate potential revenue and financing mechanisms.
Renowned USC economist Dr. Joey Von Nessen outlined the significant impact transportation and infrastructure investments have on South Carolina’s growth and long-term prosperity. The meeting concluded with a candid discussion with Senators Sean Bennett (R-Dorchester), Allen Blackmon (R-Lancaster), Danny Verdin (R-Laurens), and Overture Walker (D-Richland). Each emphasized the indispensable role of the state’s infrastructure to our quality of life and the importance of public education in shaping sound transportation policy. Like their counterparts in the SC House, they agreed that strengthening South Carolina’s transportation network will require openness to a full range of strategies and solutions.
